As an investment professional and a retail investor myself, I enjoy attending the AGMs of the companies that I hold shares in. I usually attend 3 – 4 AGMs a year and was glad to attend a physical one recently after it went back to in-person AGM. The AGM process was eye-opening as I got to hear first-hand from the senior management in-charge sharing their views, thoughts and forward-looking statements for their company. This gives more details and adds a personal feel to the company beyond just reading their annual reports or financial statements. I think the purpose of AGMs help to connect senior management of the company with shareholders and provides a platform for shareholders to ask questions. It is through this process that senior management can also get to know what their shareholders are concerned about or wish to learn more about in certain aspects of the company’s growth. I thought it was refreshing to hear how the senior management members answered some of the complex questions posted by the audience. It might be better if more time is set aside for the Q&A segment for future AGMs and to also limit the answers to keep it short and succinct so that other questions can be covered too.
